New AI model may identify pancreatic cancer risk up to 5 years early
Mayo Clinic researchers say an AI model could flag people at higher risk of pancreatic cancer up to five years before diagnosis using routine health records.
A new study from Mayo Clinic researchers suggests that an AI model could use routine electronic health records and laboratory data to identify people at higher risk of pancreatic cancer up to 5 years before diagnosis.
Mayo Clinic researchers presented findings showing an AI model can identify people at higher risk of pancreatic cancer up to five years before a clinical diagnosis.
The model was trained on electronic health records and lab results from nearly 40,000 patients, including over 6,000 who went on to develop pancreatic cancer.
The findings have not yet been peer-reviewed and more testing is needed before the tool could be used in routine clinical care, the researchers said.
The study found survival rates are around 44% when pancreatic cancer is caught early but drop to just 3% when it has spread, so early detection tools like this could be life-changing.
