NASA's Roman Space Telescope is performing nearly 30% better than expected after engineers moved a mirror by just one-sixteenth the width of a human hair to sharpen its focus.
NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope has exceeded expectations after engineers made incredibly tiny adjustments to sharpen its view of the universe. By moving a mirror just one-sixteenth the width of a human hair, the team helped bring its powerful instruments into near-perfect alignment. Roman’s Wide Field Instrument now produces image quality nearly 30% better than predicted, promising exceptionally sharp cosmic surveys.
NASA's Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope has exceeded its performance expectations by almost 30% following incredibly precise optical adjustments by engineers.
Engineers moved a mirror by just one-sixteenth the width of a human hair, and the Wide Field Instrument's 18 detectors and calibration systems have all tested successfully.
The sharper optics put the telescope on track to investigate dark matter, dark energy and other cosmic mysteries through sweeping surveys of the universe.
