Israelis shatter turnout records in election that will pass wartime judgment on Netanyahu
Israelis turned out to vote in record numbers in a wartime election that will decide whether Benjamin Netanyahu stays in power after the October 7 attacks.
Israelis surged to the polls on Tuesday at a pace that shattered records, to pass wartime judgment on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in what voters described as the most consequential election in the nation's history.
Israelis voted in record numbers on Tuesday in the first election since the October 7, 2023 Hamas-led attacks, with 44.9 per cent casting ballots in the first seven hours.
Netanyahu's main rival is former military chief Gadi Eisenkot, and opinion polls show a close race with neither leader having a clear path to forming government.
A surge in votes from Israelis of Palestinian heritage could complicate Netanyahu's chances and may require Arab party support to form any alternative government.
