How Many Steps a Day Does It Take to Sharpen Your Attention? A 14-Year Study Hints at The Range
A 14-year US study found people who walked more, around 8,800 to 14,000 steps a day, scored better on attention and decision-making tests.
A daily step count is a simple way to keep track of how much we move.
Researchers tracked 3,093 US adults over 14 years and found those who moved more tended to perform better on cognitive tests.
Three groups averaged 5,108, 8,875, and 14,161 daily steps, with both more active groups outperforming the least active on attention and impulse-control tasks.
The researchers say the benefits could extend to everyday life, including staying focused at work and sticking to long-term goals like saving money.
The study found even the middle activity group, averaging around 8,875 steps a day, scored meaningfully better on attention tasks, so a daily walk could be worth building in.
