Flydubai co-pilot allegedly wielded axe in attempted terrorist attack
The co-pilot of a flydubai flight to Israel has been accused of a terrorist attack after wielding a cockpit axe against the pilot mid-flight.
The use of the crash axe dispels concerns that the suspect carried a knife onto the aircraft, but sets off a debate about future safeguards against rogue pilots.
UAE prosecutors say the co-pilot of flydubai Flight FZ1073 attacked the lead pilot with a crash axe in what they are calling a terrorist attack.
The co-pilot, identified as Omani national Hammam al-Hammami, had reportedly been banned from flying in Oman over concerns about radical ideological views.
All 174 passengers and crew were saved when two off-duty pilots on board stabilised the Boeing 737 MAX and landed it in Saudi Arabia.
