A major clinical trial found that continuous glucose monitors help type 2 diabetes patients who don't use insulin spend five extra hours a day in a healthy blood sugar range.
Continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) could transform diabetes management for millions of Americans with type 2 diabetes who don't take insulin, according to findings published in the New England Journal of Medicine.
A large clinical trial published in the New England Journal of Medicine found continuous glucose monitors significantly improved blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes patients not using insulin.
The study of 283 adults found CGM users spent about five extra hours daily in their target blood sugar range, and nearly twice as many reached the key A1c goal below 7 per cent.
Researchers say the findings could reshape treatment guidelines for the estimated 20 million Americans with type 2 diabetes who do not take insulin.
If you or someone you know has type 2 diabetes and doesn't use insulin, ask your GP whether a continuous glucose monitor could be worth trying.
