Alzheimer's warning signs could emerge years before memory loss, study finds
A Stanford study found brain scan patterns can predict Alzheimer's disease up to 12 years before memory loss begins.
A Science Advances study reveals how brain scan connectivity patterns predict Alzheimer's disease years before memory loss or cognitive decline.
Stanford Medicine researchers found that subtle changes in how brain regions communicate can predict Alzheimer's years before any memory problems appear.
Their scoring model, called the ARC score, distinguished super agers from Alzheimer's patients with about 85 per cent accuracy across more than 1,300 adults.
People whose brain scans resembled Alzheimer's patterns showed faster memory decline and more amyloid plaques over follow-up periods of up to 12 years, the researchers found.
The ARC score matched or outperformed standard risk measures, so ask your GP about brain scan monitoring if Alzheimer's runs in your family.
