Alzheimer's blood biomarker tracks brain amyloid similarly across racial groups, study finds
A major global study found that a blood test for Alzheimer's risk works consistently across racial groups, supporting its use to screen diverse populations for clinical trials.
A large global study provides new evidence supporting the use of blood biomarkers in an Alzheimer's clinical trial to screen for elevated brain amyloid levels among potential participants who are cognitively unimpaired. The findings, published in JAMA Neurology, show that the relationship between blood biomarker levels and brain amyloid was largely similar across racial groups.
A study of more than 15,600 adults across 106 research sites found a blood biomarker test for Alzheimer's risk performed consistently across different racial groups, published in JAMA Neurology.
The test measures a protein fragment called %p-tau217, and while its relationship to brain amyloid was consistent, levels were generally lower in Asian, Black and Hispanic participants.
Researchers say the findings support using this blood test to screen more diverse participants for early Alzheimer's trials testing drugs before symptoms even begin.
The study found biomarker levels were lower in Asian, Black and Hispanic participants, which researchers say raises important questions about dementia risk factors across populations.
