World First: Underwater Volcano Off US Coast Generates Net-Positive Electricity
A US engineering team generated net-positive electricity from an underwater volcano off the Oregon coast for the first time, though only for 8.7 seconds.
An engineering team lowered a generator to the ocean floor and ran it using heat from an underwater volcano.
Seattle-based Endurance Energy successfully generated more electricity than its system consumed using heat from an underwater volcano off the Oregon coast.
The net-positive output lasted just 8.7 seconds, producing a median surplus of about 2 kilowatts and a peak of 16.5 kilowatts from water at around 281 degrees Celsius.
The experiment is the first of its kind and raises the possibility of tapping deep-sea geothermal energy as a power source that does not depend on sun or wind.
