Researchers studied fossilised insect wings from Inner Mongolia to reconstruct the calls of creatures that lived alongside dinosaurs.
The 20 fossil specimens belong to 9 extinct species related to modern crickets and katydids, dating back to the Middle Jurassic period.
Because insect wings are made of chitin and preserve well, scientists could analyse the sound-producing structures in remarkable detail.
