"We got it done!' Spacewalking astronauts finish installing next-gen ISS solar arrays
Two astronauts completed the final solar array installation on the ISS, wrapping up a 15-year project that boosts the station's power by 30%.
Spacewalkers Anil Menon and Joshua Kutryk installed the final ISS Roll-Out Solar Array on Thursday (Nov. 5), wrapping up a multiyear effort to boost the station's power generation by 30%.
NASA astronaut Anil Menon and Canadian astronaut Joshua Kutryk installed the eighth and final roll-out solar array on the ISS during a nearly seven-hour spacewalk.
The team hit a snag with shunt current readings and had to wait for the station to pass into Earth's shadow before they could safely resolve the connector issue and deploy.
With all eight arrays now in place, the ISS has completed a 15-year upgrade program that boosts its total power generation by as much as 30 per cent.
The completed iROSA upgrades mean the ISS can now generate up to 30% more electricity, supporting future science missions and crew operations on the station.
