US prosecutors have added torture charges against Venezuela's Nicolas Maduro and his wife, who already face drug trafficking charges after being captured in January.
US prosecutors on Thursday charged ousted Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores with conspiring to torture political opponents and American citizens, adding to the drug trafficking case the couple already faced.
US prosecutors charged former Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores with conspiring to torture political opponents and American citizens.
The new indictment, added to existing drug trafficking charges, alleges torture of nine people including three US citizens, and carries a mandatory minimum of 50 years if convicted on all counts.
Maduro and Flores have pleaded not guilty to the original charges and have not yet entered pleas to the new indictment, with a trial scheduled for next year.
