US lifts tariffs on some Canadian goods before midterm elections
The Trump administration is easing some of its 50 per cent tariffs on Canadian goods from 30 October, just two weeks before the US midterm elections.
From 30 October, tariffs will be eased on some products, including certain machinery, and placed on others, such as carpets.
The US will lift some tariffs on Canadian goods including plywood, paper products and certain machinery starting 30 October, the White House confirmed.
The move comes after Republican Senator Susan Collins, in a tight Maine Senate race, said she had lobbied senior Trump officials for the relief.
Canada said it stands ready to work constructively toward a better trade deal, but the broader 50 per cent tariffs imposed after August talks collapsed remain largely in place.
