Soldiers guard center of Milan as thousands of protesters march in cities across Europe
Thousands of protesters marched through Italian and other European cities on Saturday, with soldiers and boarded-up luxury stores in Milan after violent clashes the week before.
While protests in France have claimed most international attention, large demonstrations also rocked many European cities Saturday from Milan to Rome to Madrid, Lisbon and Tirana.
Large protests swept several European cities including Milan, Rome, Turin, Madrid, Lisbon and Tirana on Saturday, with authorities deploying heavy security to prevent a repeat of last week's violence.
Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni sent an extra 500 soldiers to Milan and announced tougher penalties for minors, who police said made up a large part of last week's violent protesters.
Milan's demonstration stayed largely peaceful, though brief clashes broke out in Rome and Turin, and the protests covered issues from housing and pensions to anti-war sentiment and corruption.
