Scientists transplanted laboratory-grown human brain organoids into bioengineered mice, creating a new way to study human brain development, the journal Nature reported.
The mice were engineered to lack most of their own cerebral cortex, giving the transplanted human tissue room to grow and form functional neural networks.
Researchers say the advance could speed up understanding of conditions like autism, epilepsy and schizophrenia, since living human brain tissue is otherwise inaccessible for ethical reasons.
The researchers say this method could help test whether potential treatments can prevent or correct disease-related changes in human brain development, which may eventually benefit patients.
