Scientists solve a 30-year mystery behind inflammatory bowel disease
Scientists have discovered that some IBD patients produce antibodies that block the body's ability to control inflammation, potentially explaining severe cases.
Scientists have identified a hidden cause of inflammatory bowel disease: antibodies that disable the immune system’s natural ability to control inflammation, potentially explaining severe illness in thousands of patients. The breakthrough also solves a 30-year genetic mystery and could pave the way for more precise diagnoses and targeted treatments.
A study in the New England Journal of Medicine identified antibodies in some IBD patients that block a key protein, IL-10, which normally keeps inflammation in check.
Researchers examined more than 4,900 IBD patients and estimate that 15,000 to 20,000 people in the UK alone could carry these harmful antibodies.
The findings suggest IBD is several distinct conditions, which could eventually allow doctors to tailor treatments to each patient's specific biological cause.
The study found roughly 3.5% of IBD patients carry these antibodies, so if your Crohn's or colitis is hard to control, it may be worth asking your specialist about this finding.
