Scientists reveal the hidden danger of missing blood pressure medication
A major study of over 91,000 people found that missing blood pressure medication significantly reduces its protection against heart attacks and strokes.
Missing blood pressure medication could mean losing much of its protection against heart attacks and strokes, according to an analysis of more than 91,000 people. Patients who consistently took their medication experienced an 11% reduction in major cardiovascular events, while those who missed too many doses saw little or no measurable benefit.
Researchers analysed data from more than 91,000 participants across nine clinical trials to measure the real impact of skipping blood pressure medication.
People who took at least 80 per cent of their doses had systolic blood pressure 5.2 mmHg lower than the comparison group, versus just 3.0 mmHg for those who took less.
The study found adherence dropped even in the structured setting of clinical trials, falling from 88 per cent in year one to 79 per cent by year five.
The study found taking at least 80 per cent of your prescribed doses keeps the full benefit, so if you sometimes skip pills, it is worth talking to your GP about strategies to stay on track.
