Attack shortly after Friedrich Merz arrived on unannounced visit intended to underline Germany’s backing
A Russian drone hit Kyiv's Northern Bridge over the Dnipro River while German Chancellor Friedrich Merz was visiting the city in a show of solidarity.
It was the fourth consecutive day Russia targeted Kyiv bridges, injuring two people, as near-constant drone attacks increasingly disrupt daily life in the capital.
Merz announced Germany would fund joint production of drone interceptors, saying Ukraine's air defences urgently need strengthening before winter.
Germany is now Ukraine's biggest military aid provider, having surpassed the US since Chancellor Merz took office in May 2025.
