Hazmat-wearing officials removed a dead fur seal from Ardrossan on the Yorke Peninsula, sparking alarm among locals already rattled by months of marine wildlife deaths.
The animal tested negative for H5 bird flu, but a necropsy could not determine a cause of death due to the extent of decomposition.
South Australia is still recovering from an algal bloom estimated to have killed more than one million animals, and H5 bird flu has now been detected in local marine mammals.
