Record breaker! Astronomers spot powerful cosmic explosion that lasted 27 days
Astronomers have recorded the longest-lasting gamma-ray burst ever seen, with its central engine staying active for 27 days, far beyond any previous record.
Astronomers have spotted a remarkable gamma-ray burst that's a real Incredible Hulk compared to other cosmic explosions of the same type.
Astronomers spotted a record-breaking gamma-ray burst, designated GRB 220706A, whose central engine kept flaring in X-rays for around 27 days after the initial blast.
That is 20 days longer than the previous record holder, and scientists at the University of Birmingham say they still do not know what is powering the burst.
The burst is linked to a stellar collapse and an unusually bright supernova, but the extreme late flaring remains unexplained and is described by researchers as unprecedented.
