Japan's JAXA agency is launching its MMX spacecraft on a mission to collect at least 10 grams of material from the surface of Mars's moon Phobos.
The probe will orbit Phobos for up to three years before landing, with a French-built rover called IDEFIX scouting the surface first to ensure a safe touchdown.
Scientists hope the samples will reveal how Mars and its moons formed and shed light on how water and organic compounds reached the inner Solar System.
The MMX probe launches from Tanegashima Space Center on Tuesday at 4:41am local time, arriving near Mars about one year later.
