Inside the Chinese city helping sustain the hermit kingdom of North Korea
The Chinese border city of Dandong has opened a major new four-lane bridge to North Korea, deepening an economic relationship that keeps Pyongyang afloat despite international sanctions.
I was on a tourist boat as it passed into North Korean waters, just 100 metres from the shoreline of the hermit kingdom. The tourists around me were all asking one question.
China and North Korea opened a new four-lane border bridge between Dandong and Sinuiju, the biggest crossing between the two cities.
China accounts for about 95 per cent of North Korea's official trade, most of it flowing through Dandong, and experts say the new bridge could dramatically increase cargo loads.
The opening signals a deepening relationship between Beijing and Pyongyang at a time when North Korea remains under heavy international sanctions over its nuclear program.
