Human Embryo Models Show Important Biological Differences
A University of Sydney study found that lab-grown embryo models don't accurately replicate real human embryos, which matters for fertility and miscarriage research.
A University of Sydney study finds that stem-cell-derived blastoids mimic some early embryo features but differ from natural human embryos.
University of Sydney researchers published a study in Cell Systems comparing four leading lab-grown blastoid models against a detailed atlas of real human embryo development.
The atlas drew on more than 14,000 single-cell snapshots from real embryos, and no blastoid model accurately represented a natural human embryo, with some producing cell types that matched no known embryonic stage.
The team says their framework gives researchers a consistent way to test how reliable these models are, which is critical for making accurate discoveries about fertility and miscarriage.
The researchers say their new framework can now help scientists worldwide check how reliable their embryo models are before drawing conclusions about fertility or pregnancy loss.
