How to See the Orionid Meteor Shower and Other Upcoming Astronomical Events
The Orionid meteor shower peaks on 21 and 22 October, with up to 20 meteors per hour visible in dark skies before dawn.
Made up of small fragments left behind by Halley’s Comet, these meteors are known for being especially bright and speedy.
The Orionid meteor shower, made of fragments from Halley's Comet, is peaking on the nights of 21 and 22 October and runs until 7 November.
Viewers in dark skies can expect up to 20 meteors per hour, though a three-quarter moon may wash some out, so early morning is the best window.
Later in October, the moon will pass close to Saturn on the 24th, offering another easy naked-eye treat for backyard stargazers.
For the best view, head outside in the early hours between when the moon sets and sunrise on 22 October, away from city lights and away from the Orion constellation.
