An Australian sea lion at Seal Bay on Kangaroo Island died from bird flu, the first confirmed case in the species, after also being attacked by a shark.
The total Australian sea lion population is only around 10,000 to 12,000 animals, and globally seal colonies have seen pup numbers drop by up to 95 per cent from the virus.
