Almost 1700 patients awaiting federal government-funded aged care or NDIS placements could be stranded in NSW public hospitals by the middle of 2027, new data has revealed.
New NSW data shows over 1300 patients who no longer need hospital care are stranded waiting for aged care or NDIS placements, a problem known as bed block.
NSW Health Minister Ryan Park said the number has risen by 300 in a year and now blocks one in eight ED-accessible beds across NSW public hospitals.
If current trends continue, that figure could hit 1700 by June next year, putting further strain on emergency departments at Sydney's busiest hospitals.
