So let me get this straight - we've got Commonwealth funding, NHMRC, Medical Research Future Fund, ANU, Canberra Health Services AND philanthropic donors all chipping in for one centre. That's at least five different funding streams for a single facility in Canberra. How much overlap is there? What's the actual total cost per patient? Nobody ever publishes those figures. Meanwhile the rest of Australia's public hospitals are squeezed dry.

This is wonderful news, truly. Arthur's story - twenty five years of saying goodbye, and then ten more years with his daughter because of proper diagnosis. That is what medicine should be. I wonder though, how many patients from regional areas or other states will actually be able to access this centre? Will it be another service that exists mostly for Canberra residents, inshallah this expands.

The genetic and immunological approach makes absolute sense - I see it constantly in pharmacy where people are on multiple medications that could have been avoided with proper testing upfront. But here's my concern: how long is the waiting list going to be? Personalised medicine is brilliant until you're waiting eighteen months for an appointment while your immune system is destroying your joints. Hope they've actually staffed it properly.
