Brazil’s presidential race to go to second round as Flávio Bolsonaro leads incumbent Lula
Brazil's election is heading to a runoff on 25 October after far-right candidate Flávio Bolsonaro narrowly beat incumbent Lula with 47.1% but fell short of an outright majority.
Far-right challenger and son of disgraced ex-president Jair Bolsonaro will now face leftwing president in runoff vote
Brazil's presidential election will go to a second round after Flávio Bolsonaro won 47.1% of the vote, just short of the majority needed to avoid a runoff.
Bolsonaro, 45 and son of disgraced former president Jair Bolsonaro, will face incumbent Lula, 80, in a head-to-head vote on 25 October.
Bolsonaro enters the runoff as favourite, likely boosted by votes from other rightwing candidates who together won around 4% in the first round.
