Botswana will slaughter 25 elephants to celebrate the country's 60th Anniversary of Independence
Botswana's government has authorised the hunting of up to 25 elephants and dozens of other wildlife to provide game meat for its 60th Independence Day celebrations.
Reports from the Southern African country reveal that Botswana’s 60th Independence celebrations will carry the unmistakable flavor of the wild.
Botswana's Environment and Tourism Minister has issued complimentary hunting licences to kill elephants and other wildlife for the country's 60th Independence celebrations in September 2026.
Allocations of elephants were spread across districts including Chobe, North West, Okavango, Boteti, North East, Tutume, Serowe and Bobirwa, alongside eland, kudu, gemsbok and impala.
Botswana, which holds the world's largest elephant population of around 132,000, says hunting in agricultural areas is an existing tool for managing human-wildlife conflict.
