Archaeologists have found 1,200-year-old mummified hairless dogs at a Wari Empire site in Peru, the first physical evidence of the breed there.
Archaeologists have discovered 1,200-year-old remains of Peru’s famous hairless dogs at an ancient Wari Empire burial site, including remarkably preserved mummies and puppies buried alongside humans. Their unusual teeth, diets, and burial arrangements reveal surprising clues about how ancient Peruvians cared for, bred, and sometimes discarded their dogs.
Researchers found remarkably preserved mummified remains of Peruvian hairless dogs at Castillo de Huarmey, a Wari Empire site on Peru's northern coast.
The site, occupied between 600 and 1050 CE, had previously yielded an undisturbed elite tomb containing 58 high-status women and around 1,300 artifacts.
The study found the dogs were buried alongside humans, offering new insight into the complicated bonds between people and animals in ancient Andean societies.
