A Deep-Sea Mining Trial Rapidly Threw The Seafloor Ecosystem Off Kilter
A study found that a deep-sea mining trial in the South China Sea rapidly disrupted the microbes that keep seafloor nutrients in balance.
The deep sea may seem very far away, but it's more connected to our world than you might think.
Scientists from the Chinese Academy of Sciences found that a 2020 deep-sea mining trial in the South China Sea quickly threw the seafloor ecosystem off balance.
Mining stirred up sediment and altered nitrogen and silicate levels in water up to 50 metres above the seafloor, the study found.
The South China Sea supports fisheries for about 3.7 million people, so disrupting its deep nutrient cycles could have far-reaching consequences, the researchers warn.
